Festivals and traditions of the Ebro Delta



Terres de l'Ebre are full of history, traditions and culture. They are the perfect excuse to get to know the history and character of its people, where they come from and who they are. There are many traditional events full of history that will make you fall in love and allow you to get to know their traditional heritage.

DELTAFIRA

In May of each year the Deltafira takes place, a gastronomic and tourist show in which restaurants and food and tourism companies of the area participate. Various typical Delta dishes are offered, as well as wine tastings. This event is held to commemorate the birth of Tortosa, which was constituted on May 20, 1977 when the districts of Jesús y María and La Cava were segregated.

RENAISSANCE FESTIVALS

During the second half of July, the city of Tortosa dresses in period costume to celebrate the Renaissance Festival, with the subtitle "The splendor of a city in the sixteenth century", to commemorate the historical period of greatest splendor in the town. For several days the town is filled with markets, dances, medieval cuisine, and even comedians and artists that fill the atmosphere with fun. You can also enjoy regattas along the Ebro.

LA PLANTADA FESTIVITIES

The Fiestas de la Plantada begin in June and are the first festivities dedicated to rice that end with the Fiesta de la Sega, celebrated at the end of September. These festivities are perfect to fully immerse yourself in one of the most deeply rooted traditions of Terres de l'Ebre: planting, harvesting and reaping rice. It is celebrated with a great festive day, where the task of planting rice as the peasants used to do in the past is revived. During the days of celebration there are also musical performances, popular meals and traditional markets.

MEETING OF "JOTAS"


The last week of September of each year takes place the Jota Groups Meeting, an interesting event where several jota groups from all the towns show their way of understanding this traditional dance. In 2010 the Generalitat declared the jota dance of national interest in Catalonia.

THE PASSION OF THE CAVA

It is one of the most representative shows of popular culture in Baix Ebre. At Easter there are performances of the Passion, with a great staging in the street, live music and more than a hundred performers. This year marks the sixty-sixth anniversary of this traditional and heartfelt spectacle for the most believers.

CARNIVAL

In Terres de l'Ebre, specifically in Godall (Montsià), they celebrate the oldest carnival in the province, a tradition that survived the prohibition of carnivals during the Civil War. This festival has become the most spectacular in the area. Costume dances, comparsas, party nights and flour battles make it one of the most popular carnivals in the whole Ebro.
