The traditional Rice Festivals in the Delta de l'Ebre

Every autumn, when the month of October arrives, the Terres de l'Ebre becomes the scene of one of the most emblematic celebrations of the territory: the rice harvest festivals. A tradition that transports us directly to the past and that highlights the rice culture that has marked the history and identity of the Delta.

During these days, the fields come alive with recreations of how the harvest was done in the past: men and women dressed in traditional clothes, sickles in hand and popular songs that accompany the collective work. All of this reminds us of how, before the arrival of machinery, harvesting was hard work but also a community and festive experience.

In addition, these celebrations help to keep the collective memory alive and transmit to new generations the pride for a crop that is much more than food: it is heritage, culture and identity.

The process of harvesting rice was slow and demanding. The reapers, equipped with sickles, bent their backs for hours to cut the stalks that hold the rice grains. Each movement required precision and strength, and had to be repeated hundreds of times until the sheaves were filled, which were then tied and stacked in the field. Mowing a rice field by hand could take several days and required the participation of many people. It was not an easy job or suitable for everyone: the heat, humidity and uncomfortable position made it a hard task, reserved for those who were used to working the land.

But today, the harvest festivals are more than just an effort: they are an ethnographic exhibition and also a meeting point for residents and visitors, with cultural activities, traditional dances, gastronomic tastings and local product markets. And, of course, rice. Lots of rice! A unique opportunity to experience the authenticity of the Delta up close and to better understand the bond between people, the land and rice.

Today, these festivals are an ideal opportunity to learn up close how rice was worked and to better understand the link between the people and the landscape of the Delta de l'Ebre.

At Arròs Montsià we encourage you to come and discover the Delta de l'Ebre and the harvest festivals, as they are an experience that combines tradition, gastronomy and landscape, and that will make you appreciate even more every grain of rice from the Delta de l'Ebre that reaches your table.
