According to the Green Revolution study, in Spain 0.5% of the population is vegetarian, if we add vegans and flexitarians, this figure rises to 9.9%.
The "veggie" movement (which includes vegetarians, vegans and flexitarian vegetarians) continues to grow. Vegan options continue to gain more and more followers.
This trend not only affects the opening of new vegan establishments but also includes 100% vegan recipes on the menus of the most traditional restaurants.
In the last five years, the number of "veggie" establishments in Spain has multiplied, and there are already more than 18,000 establishments with a menu adapted to new products such as Heura, vegetable cheese, tofu or quinoa.
In a society where information travels much faster than it did a few years ago, it is quite normal for a large part of society to change its ways of thinking and acting, and more specifically its eating habits.
Differences between veganism and vegetarianism
Veganism is commonly known as a dietary behavior and philosophy of life, which completely rejects the consumption of foods, products and ingredients of animal origin. It includes animal derivatives such as dairy, eggs, meat and other by-products. In the ethical field, it also rejects the use of animal-derived clothing, fishing, hunting, animal experiments and the buying and selling of animals.
Throughout history, the practice of not consuming or using animal products has been practised for hundreds of years. The invention of the term dates back to 1944, by Donald Watson, founder of the British Vegetarian Society. In Vegetarian News magazine, Watson compared the use of animals to human slavery.
The differences with vegetarianism are mainly based on excluding from their diet the consumption of meat, fish, insects, broth... However, many vegetarians do consume dairy products, honey and eggs. Vegetarianism is less strict than veganism, in addition, there are several variants:
-Milk-vegetarians: they exclude meat and fish from their diet, but they do consume dairy products such as cheese, yoghurts, milk, etc.
-Ovo-dairy-vegetarians: avoid meat and fish consumption, but do consume dairy products and eggs.
-Pescetarians: do not consume meat, but do eat fish and seafood.
Why are so many people joining this movement?
Most vegetarians or vegans are young people between 15 and 35 years old from developed countries.
Nowadays, we have more information about the negative impact our lifestyle has on our health, the planet and animals. This awareness is also entering the public agenda in many countries, slowly contributing to a change in the mentality of the population. Today we have many environmentalists, activists and animalists who are a source of inspiration and mass mobilization, such as Greta Thunberg.
Thanks to the virality of social networks, this lifestyle is spreading faster. For example, on the Instagram hashtag #veganfoodshare, you will find vegan recipes shared by thousands of people around the world.
Today it is easier to become vegan or vegetarian as a result of the high demand, many sectors have discovered an opportunity to diversify their products and supply this niche market... Many establishments sell exclusively vegan products, with alternatives to meat such as Heura or fish made with tofu.
It is not only the food sector that has readapted... More and more companies are creating high-quality fashion that is completely animal-free, thus excluding leather, fur, wool, feathers or silk. Instead, they use plant-based materials such as linen, cotton or synthetic materials such as fur or polyester.
